- reviews -

Piano Concerto No. 3 features fourth-place winner Ayano Shimada in a fleet and breezy rendition that shows off her energetic and accurate fingerwork. Shimada is keenly aware of the music's classical underpinnings, most evident in the first movement. She deftly navigates the tricky rhythms of the slow movment's central variations, then displays impressive alacrity in the finale's grand closing bars. Of course, Martha Argerich's enthralling DG recording remains the standard, but Shimada is an intriguing newcomer.

Ayano Shimada played one of the composer's most popular concertos with delightful touches of light and shade, and interplay with the orchestra.
